So what’s the deal with running anyway?
Well, I wasn’t always a “runner”, and I use that term loosely as many will challenge who is defined as a “runner” by their pace, speed and distance records. For me, a “runner” is anyone who runs. The moment you add a bounce to your walk and get your heart pumping a little faster – you’re a runner. Who’s to say what the ideal pace is anyway?
A few years ago, I was inspired to give it a try. On my quest to get myself is shape, I decided to take this special person’s advice, and just go for it. I started off slow, running in increments of about 30 seconds at a time. I then gradually increased it to a minute, and so on, until I was able to run comfortably for 10 minutes without stopping. It took about 4 weeks of consistency to acheive that first milestone, but I did it.
I never looked back.
I have since ran multiple 5K races, 10K races, and am now training for my first half-marathon.
Running is therapy, it’s my time to simply tune out the world around me and lose myself in my thoughts and in the music blasting in my ears. It’s a chance to decompress, and release the stress that is built up from everyday life. It’s my ME time.
KEFI FIT is my time to socialize, to laugh, to bring people together in one space, under the scope of exercise in a fun environment. As much as I love that aspect of my life, it can be draining at times, therefore having a very personal outlet where it’s really just me, myself and I is very important to me.
During the early stages of the pandemic, collectively as a group, we were looking for opportunities to get in our exercise and connect with our members safely outdoors. Our South Shore Admin team member Stella, came up with this running group idea and we just went with it! We decided to organize weekly runs/walks in various parks throughout the city as a way to discover the outdoors while motivating each-other to MOVE!
There is no cost to participate and it is open to everyone and anyone interested in getting in an extra activity. The path is pre-determined in advance and we usually keep it between 3-5K. You always have the choice to run or walk, or do both! Depending on the size and the needs of the group, we have someone leading the runners and the walkers, so no-one is left behind.
I may not be the fastest, or the strongest, or the fittest runner out there, but I sure am determined, and honestly at the end of the day, that’s all you need! A litte determination, some motivation, and the desire to improve your quality of life and health. If you’re able to have a laugh and meet some great people along the way, why not?
If you’re interested in keeping up-to-date with our runs/walks, and our schedule, check out the Facebook group below and join us! It’s a great way to start to your day and your weekend.
You never know, you might be signing up for your first 5K before you know it!
